Nursery School Graduation

Today was Drew's graduation from Hornby Cooperative nursery school.  It was adorable.  His teachers had made them little "caps" and they all marched into the classroom to the graduation song (the name escapes me) and then sat proudly up on the stage.  Then they sang us a few songs and recieved their certificates.  Lunch and playtime outside followed.  It was a great day, and I only welled up with a few tears....no sobbing as I had expected.  My mom came, and James made it before work.

Today is also my parents 34th anniversary.  I took the kids over to their house for dinner and brought them an ice cream cake.  Drew picked out a "cars" one, apparently "Papa really likes lightening McQueen, mommy".  I hope he liked it, cost me an extra 5 bucks to have lightening on that cake!  LOL.

June 24, 2010

Once again, it's been a while.  Here's an update....
We met with a pediatrician in Toronto regarding Hunter's breathing issues.  At this appointment, we checked his weight and he had gained significantly since the "red-flag" appointment...good news!  The doctor listened to him breathing, and checked him all over.  He told us that sometimes babies are just "happy wheezers" and grow out of the congestion.  Good news, I guess?
Drew has played a season of blastball.  He has his final tournement on saturday.  It's been adorable.  It's a pre-cursor to t-ball, with a "t" and only one base.  The kids take turns hitting and fielding.  Mostly though, they just play in the grass and pay attention to other things.  I'm glad we put Drew into it though.  He's enjoying being on a "team" and it has forced us to be outside on a tuesday night.......also, it's been a good excuse to get ice cream on tuesday nights!
Hunter can now walk while holding onto someones hand.  He's nothing like Drew though.  Drew didn't like crawling much, and went straight to walking.  Hunter seems to love crawling, and is sooo fast at it.  He's much slower at "walking" and I think that's why he'd rather crawl.  He has also gotten his first two teeth..finally!  I think he's getting some more too, seems to be pretty uncomfortable.
Sleep is still lacking at our house.  Hunter won't sleep more than 2-3 hours at a time.  I'm still nursing him at night, which is encouraging the situation....I'm at a total loss....have no idea what to do.
The cottage has been great.  We've gone up a lot for just 1 or 2 nights here and there.  James' schedule is fantastic for the cottage.  He works 5 days on, 4 days off.  We can go up for a couple of days and come back and still have a few days to get stuff done around here......although, it still feels like nothing is getting done here....
So far at the cottage though, we've drywalled the 3 bedrooms, but laminate into 2 of the bedrooms (the 3rd one is to come) and started extending the deck a little bit.  We still have a very long list of things we want to do though.

April 27, 2010

We have an appt. with our doctor tomorrow to check up on Hunter.  I'm hoping she'll refer him to a pediatrician.  I'm not willing to wait the 3 months she is suggesting to see if he gets better.  If it's asthma or allergies, we should deal with them now, so he's breathing better.

We are buying a cottage.  It's on the Otonabee river in Peterborough at Rice lake.  It's a co-ownership cottage.  It was a resort.  The owner is selling off each of the cottages (there are 10) individually.  When we close the deal (in june) we will have exclusive rights to our cottage as well as a 1/10 ownership in the property.  This deal seems to be a great fit for us for a few reasons;
a) it's cheaper than buying a traditional freehold cottage
b) we pay a "condo" fee each month, which takes care of our taxes, water/hydro bills, grass-cutting, property maintenance, etc.  Having the farm to take care of leaves us without the desire to cut even more grass....this makes it possible to have the enjoyment of a cottage without the hassle!
c) it allows us the freedom to go up on a "spur of the moment" basis for a night or two.  Unlike the fractional ownership deals that we were considering before this came up.

Our plan is to go up and stay our first night this weekend.  We're very excited.

And things change once again...

Hunter is not only crawling, he's pulling himself up to a standing position.  This is both exciting, and terrifying.  He's into everything.  Drew is 3 and has many toys that are not appropriate/downright dangerous for a 9 month old.  Can you say, choking hazard?!?!  It was so easy to baby-proof with Drew, and now to try and keep the house interesting and exciting for my biggest, little man, and safe for my littlest is so hard.  How do people have more than one child?  It's been 9 months since my number 2 was born and I'm still trying to figure it out......
This whole crawling/pulling himself up business has become an issue for Drew too.  Hunter is obviously interested in what his big brother is doing, so he's all over whatever Drew is doing.  Oh dear.

Let's try this again...

So, I've let this whole "blogging" thing go a bit.  Haven't posted in a couple of months.  I'm going to try and give it another go.  It's really important to me to try and record some of our "happenings".

A major highlight of the past few months was another trip to Florida.  We went back and forth on this trip, trying to decide whether to go or not.  Finally decided that it would be the last time James would have to go away without taking any vacation time (unless we have another baby) so we went.  Stayed at my parents time-share, and had a blast!

We were there over Easter, so the condo held an egg-hunt on the driving range, and the Easter bunny found us in our condo....lots of chocolate and treats to be had!  Drew, Hunter and I all came down with some sort of crazy flu-bug where we were all puking like crazy.  I was very thankful for the 2 bathrooms.  It was really bad for a few days.....but I would still rate the trip as a success.  The weather was perfect, and we hit Disney for a few days too.

Since then, James has gone back to work.  It's been quite a transition.  Drew tells me every day that he misses daddy.  We're at my parents house alot, I'm very thankful that they live so close.  I'll write more on this as we adjust to life without daddy 24/7.

Hunter had his 9 month check-up and has lost weight.  This concerns our doctor, and she even through out a possiblity of cystic fibrosis (he's been congested for months now).  The whole CF thing has really freaked me out, but I'm not convinced it's a serious concern.  We have to wait for his 12 month check-up to see how he's doing then....great, 3 months of worry, just what I need!

Some funny things that Drew has said,
-He called my dad, "farty Mcpoopy pants".
-He was on the potty the other day and asked me to smell his poop.  I said, "why, does it smell like roses?"  He replies, "ya, dirty ones".
-He was in the potty today and told me his penis was pretty red.  He then says, "maybe I should stop touching it so much, then it wouldn't be so red".  LOL

Croup

Had a bit of a scary night here last night.  Drew has had a bit of a cough for a few days now, but last night, while James and I were watching tv we heard him coughing and calling for us.  I went up to see what was going on and found him crying, trying to call for us and barely able to breath.  His cough sounded more like a seal bark than a cough.

In a panic, I brought him downstairs....he seemed as if he was going to puke each time he coughed.  We took him to the kitchen, where James took him from me (cause I was a bit of a wreck) and calmed him down.  Once he stopped crying, and was able to breath again, he fell asleep and we took him back up to his room (James decided that he would sleep with him, just in case).

Once Drew was in bed, James took off to the superstore to purchase a humidifier, which seemed to help alot.  Drew hardly coughed after the "episode" at all......it's on again tonight.  I honestly didn't think it would make that much of a difference.

It was pretty scary, as Drew was drooling quite a lot and seemed to be in quite a lot of pain.  He seems ok today though, and was no worse for the wear this morning.

The Soo-soo fairy

So, after all that talk about my 3 and a half year old still having a soother, we decided to just "rip the band-aid off" and take it away.  Here's how it went down....
A few months ago, we visited the dentist for the first time.  The dentist did his part by telling Drew that soon he'd have to get rid of the soother, because it was hurting his teeth.  Playing on that theme, I told Drew about the "soo-soo fairy".  This fairy is a magical fairy who works along with the dentist to make sure that parents are following the dentist's directions.  The soo-soo fairy showed up at our house the other day, while Drew was sleeping and was very upset with us.  We weren't following the dentists orders, Drew still had his soother!  The soo-soo fairy promptly took the soother away.  When Drew woke up, the soo-soo was gone, and we had to tell him about the soo-soo fairy showing up (who we had been warning him about for months).
Worked like a charm.  Mind you, if the soo-soo fairy ever shows up at our house again, she's getting a punch to the face from my 3 year old.....or so he tells me...EVERY DAY.....he is not happy with her!
It's been pretty smooth.  The first night without the soother, he fell asleep on the car ride home from nanas, but woke up at 4am screaming for it.....he stayed in his room, on his bed with James, but would not fall back asleep.  Since then, he's fallen asleep without it, and stayed asleep all night.  Knock on wood, it's gone better than expected!
We also made a big deal about him being a big boy, and took him to Toys R Us to pick out a "big boy" toy, that only boys who didn't use soothers could play with.  He chose to be "just like daddy and papa" and picked out a chain saw.  Very cute.
